The role of the private sector in tackling undernutrition’

A decade on from the inaugural event, world leaders are preparing to come together in Rome for the second international conference on nutrition to review global progress. With 805 million people in the world chronically undernourished there is still some way to go to eliminate undernutrition, especially in Africa and South Asia. Much has been made of the role that business can play in accelerating progress – especially through providing nutritious foods – but are these expectations well placed?

To celebrate World Food Day 2014, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in collaboration with The National Geographic Society, will be organizing a discussion “Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth – Family Farming in the 21st Century” 22 October 2014, 12-3pm, at the National Geographic Auditorium, 1145 17th Street NW, Washington D.C.
The event will bring together policy makers, opinion leaders, family farmers and business executives, to explore the role of smallholder farms in the U.S. and around the world. Prof. Sanjaya Rajaram, 2014 World Food Prize Laureate, will provide the key-note speech.

Mahidol University, Bangkok, 8 - 16 December 2014
The 4th Asian SHN course, convened by Mahidol University, the Japan Consortium for Global School Health Research and Imperial College London's Partnership for Child Development, will feature lectures and workshops from international experts on SHN topics including: Deworming, WASH, school feeding, the inclusion of children with disabilities, and disaster management in the SHN context. Participants will also visit local schools to learn from the Thai experience and will develop their country-specific SHN action plans.
