Policy and Programme

The Kenya Home Grown School Feeding (HGSF) programme was launched in 2003 by New Partnership for Africa Development, World Food Programme (WFP)  and Millennium Hunger Task Force to link school feeding to agriculture development through the purchase and use of locally produced food.  Kenya is one of the 12 pilot countries in Africa invited to implement a novel HGSF and Health programme. The Government of Kenya has positively embraced the HGSF programme and went ahead and developed two different HGSF models.  These two models are both supported by the Government of Kenya and Development partners.

  1. The first Module is the Ministry of Agriculture(MOA) led programme known as Njaa Marufuku Kenya (Eradicate hunger in Kenya) initiated in 2005. It targets areas that have high and medium potential to grow food and also areas that have high levels of school dropout, poor primary school performance, and high levels of malnutrition. Currently the programme reaches 31,720 children in 48 schools that are across six provinces
  2. The Home Grown School Meals Programme (HGSM) being the second module was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in July 2009. The Government currently transfers funds to this programme which purchases food locally to feed 538,000 school children in 1,700 schools located in 28 semi-arid districts. This programme is now trying to strengthen links with smallholder farmers to enhance local agriculture production as well.
 

A strategic plan for the National School Health, Nutrition and Meals Programme (SHN&M) is being developed.  This document is a product of various hands on experiences, practice and knowledge from Development partners, Individuals from the MOE and other SHN&M related ministries, and representatives of other stakeholders. This document which is still in draft form outlines the priorities of the SHN&M programme for the period of 2011- 2015.
