Thematic Groups The School Feeding Supply Chain
Home grown school feeding (HGSF) can create jobs and profits not only for smallholder farmers, but also for those involved in the transportation, processing, and preparation of food along the school feeding supply chain.
These jobs created in rural communities can provide off-farm income generation opportunities, many of which are often filled by women. Off-farm investment may in turn further stimulate productivity and agricultural employment, producing a “virtuous cycle” benefitting long-term food security and improving welfare in rural households.
The resources available here are specifically relevant to activities along the home grown school feeding supply chain. The policy and programme section provides background on HGSF at the global and regional levels, particularly as regards transportation, processing, and preparation of food. Operational support documents are also available, including information on local foods, operational guidelines and toolkits, and operational data.
Case studies and impact evaluation findings in the monitoring and evaluation section provide further information on the benefits and trade-offs of various HGSF supply chain designs. Resources are also provided that highlight relevant HGSF messages for advocacy purposes.
